West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has failed in his bid to get out of appearing in person at his high-profile defamation case against mining magnate Clive Palmer in Sydney next month, which by the leader’s own rules will force him into 14 days quarantine upon his return home.
Mr Walker said the quarantine requirement Mr McGowan faced if he had to fly to Sydney was “highly undesirable” and would impact the Premier’s ability to carry out his duties. He mentioned Mr McGowan’s lawyers had previously not taken him up on an offer he fly to Perth to hear the evidence from WA-based witnesses.“Mr McGowan was aware if he did give evidence, if he came to the, what is it, extreme risk, close quotes, state of New South Wales, that he would have to go back and quarantine,” he said.
At the conclusion of his case, expected to take four days, the court will adjourn for eight days. During this time Mr McGowan and Mr Quigley will remain in Perth to attend parliamentary sitting days on February 15-17, and 22-24. “I think what can happen is you can leave isolation, wear a mask, all those sorts of things, go to various places, but I wouldn’t do that,” he said.
