Queensland Health Minister StevenJMiles has defended the Premier's decision to close the border, saying the state's healthcare system is under an 'enormous burden' after nine cases of coronavirus were recorded in the state.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles has defended the Premier's decision to close the border, saying the state's healthcare system is under an "enormous burden" after nine cases of coronavirus were recorded in the state. "A lot can change in a week and we've seen in other states how it can only take one case to see a widespread outbreak," he said. "In that week we've had nine cases here in Queensland...

those cases have placed an enormous burden on our health system. "We cannot afford to have that second wave here in Queensland." Mr Miles revealed there was "intelligence" that suggested Sydney residents were using the ACT as a backdoor to Queensland to avoid hotspot border restrictions imposed on the city. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today declared NSW and the ACT coronavirus hotspots and banned residents from entering Queensland from 1am Saturday.

Premier to close coronavirus loopholes at the Queensland border | Sky News AustraliaQueensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is calling for COVID-19 loopholes to be closed for returning Queenslanders.\n\nThe Premier wants 14 day hotel quarantine mandatory for everyone and exemptions to the system scrapped after a Queensland man managed to avoid the quarantine system altogether. \n\nA Queenslander returning from Afghanistan avoided entering hotel quarantine when he claimed to be a consulate official on a border declaration pass. \n\nHowever DFAT found the declaration false, saying the man was instead a private security contractor. \n\nThe man, aged in his 20s, tested positive to coronavirus on his return to Australia and is now serving the remainder of his quarantine period at home in Toowoomba. \n\nHealth authorities are now racing to contact trace as they believe he was infected with the virus on board his flight home. AnnastaciaMP Why are we still allowing flights from melbourne? The flights should be for freight only. Ground all passenger flights from Victoria immediately. AnnastaciaMP ERADICATION + Quarantine 'Camps' is the only option. When will our politicians get this? AnnastaciaMP What an idiot, there’s a loophole getting into Queensland? Is that how those two girls got in from Melbourne? Because of Melbourne the border between NSW and QLD is closed........ Get ur shit together Annastacia.

Queensland closes its border to NSW and the ACT | Sky News AustraliaPremier Annastacia Palaszczuk has closed the Queensland border to all of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. \n\nThe Premier said the border closure – which will come into effect from 1am on Saturday – was “tough on Queenslanders” but “the right thing to do because your health comes first”. \n\n“We’ve seen what’s happened in Victoria and we don’t want to see that happen here,” she said. \n\n“Businesses have said to me loudly and clearly that they do not want to go backwards, they want to stay where they are.” \n\nPremier Palaszczuk issued a renewed warning to Queenslanders not to travel to Victoria, NSW or the ACT. \n\n“We’ve seen Victoria is not getting better, and we’re not going to wait for New South Wales to get worse,” she said. \n\n“I said I would not hesitate… and today is the day we say we are putting Queenslanders first.” \n\nThe Premier said the border announcement was, in part, in response to “continuous breaches”. \n\n“These continuous breaches that have happened by Queenslanders going down to Victoria, by Queenslanders coming up through the New South Wales border and up into Queensland, is putting our Queensland at risk,” she said. \n\n“And we have to do everything we possibly can to stop that.” \n Annastacia Palaszczuk, declaring the ACT as a virus hotspot. ..is bullsh- the ACT has had a total of 7 Cases of COVID-19 since the 30th April and is currently at 0 cases. Leaders set clear direction and take responsibility for decisions. The social function of leadership is to provide certainty in an uncertain world. ✅

Vic govt’s ‘state of disaster’ is something ‘we’re all going to pay for’ | Sky News AustraliaBroadcaster Michael McLaren says Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews “declared a state of disaster (but) he should have declared a state of disaster in his own administration probably three months ago”.\n\n“Clearly it’s the returned arrivals and the so-called hotel quarantine which has been the catalyst for the outbreak which has in their mind necessitated these changes,” Mr McLaren told Sky News host Alan Jones.\n\n“The people that instigated the problem are now saying ‘we’ve got the answers''. \n\nMr Jones noted Daniel Andrews was offered up to 1000 experienced defence force personnel to oversee the arrival of travellers from overseas and their 14 day enforced quarantine, an offer which he rejected.\n\n“There should have been far greater insistence from Scott Morrison that they follow the line that New South Wales and Queensland took cause it worked, but they had other ideas and of course now we’re all going to pay for it,” Mr McLaren said.\n\nImage: Getty DanielAndrewsMP Wow, this level of insight and commentary, outstanding.
