Voices sympathetic to Russia are posing as fact-checkers in a bid to sow doubt and confusion, and to drain sympathy from a world watching the invasion of Ukraine.

A week before the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv came under intense shelling for the first time since World War II, an alarming video announcement was circulating on encrypted messaging app, Telegram. The pro-Russian separatist leaders of the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republic warned the Ukrainian military would invade the regions on the order of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The metadata in the video, which has been independently verified by the ABC, showed the export timestamp of the announcement was created two days earlier, on February 16."What we saw in the run-up to the actual invasion was a pretty concerted attempt to show Ukraine as the aggressors," Mr Waters said."Of course, despite this, Russia then invaded."

One significant round of debunks in March pulled apart claims posted by Russian officials who falsely claimed that pregnant women being pulled from the rubble of a maternity hospital in Mariupol on March 16 were actors. The new tactic involves half a dozen pro-Kremlin Telegram channels which appear to operate as forensically minded and independent fact-checkers.Some of their "debunks" are simple, such as a post on March 1 in a channel with 720,000 subscribers — which the ABC has chosen not to name — that purportedly denies that fighting had occurred in the city of Kharkiv.

Joan Donovan — the research director at Harvard University's Shorenstein Centre on media, politics and public policy — said these channels gave the impression that Ukraine was running its own disinformation campaign and, therefore, it could not be trusted. Footage emerged of mass graves and corpses strewn in the streets. Survivors told reporters about rape, torture and executions of civilians. When confronted with evidence and testimonies, the Russian Ministry of Defence in a statement called the visual evidence "another hoax". Its embassy in Canada claimed one of the corpses in verified footage moved its arm .

Pure projection.

ABC = shilling for the Empire of Lies like good little puppets

The ABC willingly pushed stories on Ukraine that the US has now admitted were 100% false. 'China gave weapons to Russia' and 'Russia is planning to use chemical weapons' The US says these fake stories were used to 'get out ahead' of Russia. Still waiting for an apology ABC.

the video below is showing a simple mistake and no doubt it isn't a war crime. no confusion these who released it were arrested... most likely for spreading fake

Incredible that this article uses the famous photo of the girl from the maternity hospital in Mariupol. The same girl gives a long interview where she explains that the photo was a setup and she didn’t want it taken. She refutes the Ukrainian version of events. Is she lying?

Rise of fake fact-checkers in Russia denying the the Russian people of the truth in the war. Time for Russia to be bombarded with the real story, through broadcasting, leaflets and social media.

The Russians are the expansionists, but it is the United States that will not stop expansion.

How can the ABC expect to be taken seriously when this morning they reported 1000 Ukrainian “marines” had been captured by Russia? Clearly copied directly from the US ministry of propaganda....

At least Russia has one army capable of doing something.

Do Putin apologists ever reflect on their rights & freedoms? You know, the ones they enjoy while pontificating from comfy homes in the ‘evil West’? Do they think about the millions of people who would, and do, risk their lives (& die) for these things? Nah, I didn’t think so.

In a war do both sides take part in propaganda?

Pathetic lapdog of the US security state. We see through your lies and fabrications.

No diff to the current governments in Australia

As we have seen with BREXIT and now the rising far-right in France, illiberal nationalism is sweeping Russia's west. Russians are not sitting around for them to mutate into Western Nazis as they did in Germany, this time. Lest We Forget!

Western warmongers
