Fairfield resident Duy Do said he thought beachside councils were charging "quite a bit" for parking, adding that tolls put another layer of financial pressure.
"From the western suburbs to the east coast you have to go through the M4, sometimes the M5," Do said. Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone said these extra costs were stopping Sydneysiders from enjoying nature without financial penalty. Canterbury Bankstown and Wollondilly Shire both have organised "beach buses" for summer to help locals access the beach."People should be encouraged to get out and have fun without the government putting their hands in their pockets," Carbone told 9News.
