The parent uprising against declining public schools in Melbourne’s north is both uplifting and depressing. Uplifting, because in the aftermath of a disruptive federal election result, here is another instance of people signalling to governments that business-as-usual will not suffice. The depressing part is the need for such agitation in the first place; what it says about the shockingly classist society we’ve become.
of our 15-year-olds relative to their international peers, as well as the nation’s sluggish economic growth.of its student population from society’s most disadvantaged quartile. Maybe there’s also a lesson in the trend that’s accompanied falling high school enrolments: a surge in enrolments in the area’s Islamic secondary schools. I don’t lament this trend any more than I lament the drift to private schools generally, although I’d like to believe an unparalleled strength of a well-resourced public education system is the fostering of social cohesion.
But here we see the impact of the Dickensian ethos shaping Australia’s education system: public school families reduced to an Oliver Twist-style plea for “more,” with no sense of entitlement to “the best”.
More crap from the Murdoch Age! 🙄
Public school funding cut by $796 million over next three years by the LNP in this year’s budget!! Private school funding increased by 2.6 billion to 2026. That’s outrageous!
Most parents do NOT care a bout REAL education. They care about ONLY jobs and careers.A good education develops people: intellectually, occupationally somewhat, ethically, aesthetically, emotionally, socially, empathically, spiritually.
Secondary schools in parts of Melbourne’s north are thriving, including Northcote High, Thornbury High, NCAT and Preston High.
Can we please refer to them as Secondary schools? High schools are a type of Secondary school. Tech schools although small in number, still exist. The rest are Secondary schools.
Oh ffs. There’s more to choosing a school than “class” and “VCE results”. Stability, co-curriculars, and culture play a huge part in a decision. And if you’re renting and having to move between school zones what stability is there?
Melbournes north suffers from a problem of its own making. They are super safe Labor seats. Which signals to govs that no investment of any type is required to keep those votes
Safe Labor seats are always last
Schools should be trying to lift up the best and brightest. They will lead the country and provide better outcomes for everyone.
