Premier says NSW is 'on high alert' after 18 new cases recorded | LisaVisentin marywardy

NSW has recorded 18 new cases in the latest 24-hour reporting period, Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Wednesday.

Of these, one is in a returned overseas traveller in hotel quarantine, two are in returned travellers from Victoria, 13 are locally acquired from known sources and two were locally acquired with no new source.A second staff member at Hornsby Hospital has tested positive. They did not work while infectious, Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said.

A third case has been identified at Our Lady of Mercy College at Parramatta. Because the case is not immediately linked to the other two students, the high school will close for 14 days to allow for contact tracing, Dr Chant said. The Premier reminded her state that NSW is "on high alert", noting that the rules in place are effective as long as they are adhered to by all.

"Whether it is a school extra-curricular activity which shouldn't occur, whether it's the recommendation for people to wear masks when they can't guarantee social distancing on public transport or in supermarkets, or whether it's the way in which we've asked businesses to approach a COVID-safe environment, compliance is absolutely critical," she said.

She encouraged people in western and south-western Sydney to come forward for testing in light of a number of community transmission cases in the area.
