Adam O'Brien's NRL head-coaching credentials continue to climb after his Kalyn Ponga-inspired Newcastle stunned title favourites Canberra in their biggest scalp yet

Ponga and two-try teenage tyro Bradman Best, engineered one of the biggest upsets of the short but blowout-heavy season as O'Brien's side staved off a second-half fightback from a lethargic Raiders.

But O'Brien, the man who replaced Nathan Brown in Newcastle over summer, is showing why the club was so desperate to pry him away from two-time premiers the Roosters.Remarkably, the Knights blasted to a 22-point lead early in the second half before the Raiders flirted with a comeback thanks to a flying leap from Nick Cotric and a barnstorming solo effort from Josh Papalii.

Injured Raiders star John Bateman got a laugh out out of his teammates when he ordered a cardboard cutout of co-captain Josh Hodgson to sit behind the Raiders bench. Newcastle sensation Best has made Campbelltown a happy hunting ground during the COVID-19 crisis and he crashed over for the first try before Ponga jigged through the Raiders' line to extend the lead to 10 points.
