Nestled among the shiny towers that hug Circular Quay, where tourists jostle for room with sharp-suited financial workers, theThe 19th-century sandstone buildings that housed the Water Police station and courts are a reminder of a period in Sydney’s life far wilder than today, museum curator Nerida Campbell says."The city was bustling, chaotic and noisy during most of the station’s operating life," she says.
"More serious or complex offences were dealt with later in the day," she says. "We still get visitors to the museum who share their stories of spending a night in the cells or appearing before the courts."The cells also hosted some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including bushranger Captain Moonlite.
"The cells are very dark, cold and designed to be easy to hose out so human comfort was limited although most people only spent a short time in the holding cells before appearing before the courts," Campbell says. "The Circular Quay area has always held a special place in policing history as it was here that governor Arthur Phillip established the country’s first police force in 1789," he says.
_andrew I had a chance to visit this museum. Absolutely fascinating. The photographs and some of the audio exhibits really bring the past alive. Highly recommended.
