Tasmania Police will ramp up search efforts for missing man Thomas Courto and a boat after he and two friends went missing off Tasmania's north-west coast last week.

Police in Tasmania are using sonar technology to search the bottom of Bass Strait for a boat and man missing at sea for the past week.Thomas Courto and two other friends went missing near Wynyard last Monday after taking a boat out for the afternoonThe search is believed to be the biggest land and sea search in Tasmania's north-west in recent years

, less than 10 kilometres west of Wynyard, on Wednesday, but Mr Courto and the boat remain unaccounted for. Inspector Steve Jones said Tasmania Police had employed a Devonport-based underwater surveyor who would be using multi-beam sonar technology to search for the boat and missing man. "Essentially, it's an underwater survey that can do average depths of up to 15 metres of water and can see around 50 to 60 metres wide at a time, and it can search around 500 hectares per day."
