Perrottet earlier this week demanded the federal government stump up 80 per cent of the cash for the project. The promised bus links are part of the Western Sydney Cities Deal signed by the state government and then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in March 2018.Speaking at a luncheon in western Sydney on Friday, Albanese disputed that the city deal committed the federal government to pay for 80 per cent of the cost, saying he had been advised otherwise.

“The premier has not raised this with me in the many meetings that I’ve had him, not once. Nor has this issue been raised with the federal government,” he said. However, emails by senior state government officials in May – two weeks before the federal election – say the “agreed funding position” for the bus links was that the federal government was to provide 80 per cent of the money and the state the rest.The emails and other confidential NSW government documents reveal the cost of buying about 100 double-decker buses and establishing the routes linking Liverpool, Penrith and Campbelltown to the new airport will hit $1.6 billion.

Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue chairman Christopher Brown said a solution needed to be found to ensure the planned links became a reality.“We have to get those buses. You can’t have Western Sydney Airport and not let western Sydney residents get to the airport,” said Brown, whose lobby group hosted the luncheon.
