Frightening footage has emerged of a small plane crashing into the middle of a US highway, before bursting into flames. The pilot and passenger were able to escape the smoking wreckage, sprinting away from the flames. MORE: 9News

The footage shows the plane nose diving and swerving towards the ground, crashing onto the 91 Freeway in Corona, California, narrowly missing incoming cars.

Firefighters from the Corona Fire Department were called to put out the blaze.Firefighters were called to put out the fire and parts of the highway were temporarily closed.
