People who deliberately try to spread the coronavirus to Australia's healthcare workers could spend life in prison, the federal government has warned.

People who deliberately try to spread the coronavirus to Australia's healthcare workers could spend life in prison, the federal government has warned.

Reading legal advice from the Attorney-General’s department, Mr Hunt said the deliberate transmission of COVID-19 was an offence under the general criminal laws that apply in every state and territory. "In addition, those same state and territory criminal laws also make it an offence to cause someone else to fear that they are having transmitted to them the virus, for example by coughing on them."Mr Hunt said two people have already been charged in the ACT for"precisely this type of behaviour”.

Some hospitals have now warned staff not to wear their uniforms in public to avoid attracting unwanted attention to and from work."We will be cracking down on them across the jurisdictions,” he said.

You mean the Chinese ChinaVirus

You mean like government officials letting cruise ships unload Covid-19 carriers in Australia and without checks?

Isn’t that just a form of biological warfare

As if the judges have sentenced adequately to the current offenders.

But spreading it to the wider community is a plan called building herd immunity?

Right on 👏🏼

Now it's really hotting up. Fear is so powerful when used by a Govt. It is used to control a populace and bring in force a police type State. ...

Who, in their right mind would spread a deadly infection and have Dutton's Schutzstaffel descend on one's home?

Good luck proving that. Sounds like an impossible prosecution and legit more like posturing to act tough

Why aren't the govt on prison then

Sounds a bit like a media beat up - why would any one deliberately spread a virus to random people? They are probably just idiots who don't know what they're doing.

No “could” about it; they MUST face life in prison ... zero tolerance!

Why on earth would anybody want to do this?

Hear hear. And what about govt who negligently cause the spread of the virus to Australian citizens? Do they get life?

*looks at the sentencing track record for murder and tape* Yeah sure they will...

Good call!

Don't accept meals from unregistered volunteers for any medical workers or hospitals. For the greater good, tough restrictions have to be implemented 🙏🏻 only from reputable organizations with high levels of hygiene and cleanliness 💙

Perhaps that's true, but it's worth noting: 1. It would be a state offence, not federal (Hunt is federal). 2. Penalties are decided by courts, not politicians.

Protection of temporary migrants is now a 'public health issue'Opinion: We are all in this public health crisis together and we no longer have the luxury to exclude. COVID-19 does not discriminate based on visa, residency or citizenship status and nor should our policies responding to it. GO HOME how thick in the head is the left? My fellow Australians look how fast your civil liberties, freedom of movement and democratic rights disappeared. For those of you who wondered how Nazi Germany came into being this is exactly how it started. the problem is we can’t afford it. Australia is already providing the most generous support in the world. Now we are already talking that we will have a huge budget deficit and take many years to pay off
