University vice chancellors have defended the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, saying it might not be the best indicator of potential, but it is the most efficient way of ensuring student success.

Research on behalf of the universities also found rank was a strong predictor of success, as students with a higher ATAR were more likely to achieve a high grade point average and less likely to fail.Dominic Lorrimer

The NSW Vice Chancellors' Committee on Thursday defended the system as the most efficient and transparent way to identify students best equipped to succeed in their chosen field. "Thus, many pathways are available to students to enable them to demonstrate their suitability other than via a single ATAR.”

UAC general manager of engagement, Kim Paino, said the ATAR was not perfect, but it was effective and transparent.
