Queensland researchers have turned blood samples from epilepsy patients into functioning human brain tissue, allowing them to test the effectiveness of different combinations of anti-seizure drugs. This can be used to develop epilepsy treatment tailored to individualsUniversity of Queensland scientist Ernst Wolvetang hopes the novel approach will take the guesswork out of prescribing seizure drugs to epilepsy patients, a process that is often a long journey of trial and error for neurologists.

The lentil-sized organoids have the same cellular make-up and architecture as specific regions of a developing human brain, such as the cerebral cortex — the outer layer, or grey matter, used for thinking. Professor Wolvetang's team is working with the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Melbourne's Monash University on the epilepsy research, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund.

He said they use artificial intelligence to make predictions for a patient's anti-seizure drugs based on their genetics, medication history, health records and other data.
