Two passengers infected with the Omicron variant were among 14 people travelling from southern Africa who arrived in Sydney on a Qatar Airways flight.Genomic testing has confirmed two overseas travellers who arrived in Sydney from southern Africa have been infected with the new Omicron COVID-19 variant.
Some 29 people who had been in one of the nine southern African countries subject to elevated restrictions touched down in Sydney across two flights on Saturday evening.All passengers on the Qatar Airways flight are now classified as close contacts and must isolate for 14 days, even if they haven't been in southern Africa.
Although he's ordered all international arrivals to quarantine at home for 72 hours, Mr Perrottet insisted the NSW international and state borders would remain open."We can't be a hermit kingdom on the other side of the world," he said. There are no plans to adjust the state's reopening roadmap, Mr Perrottet said, so restrictions will still ease for the unvaccinated on December 15.The new variant, named Omicron by the World Health Organisation on Saturday, has been detected in South Africa, Botswana, Hong Kong, Israel, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
People already in the state who have been in the nine countries in the past two weeks must isolate for 14 days and be immediately tested. West Australian Premier Mark McGowan announced SA would be designated "low risk", introducing a quarantine requirement for international arrivals from the state.The changes mean WA is only allowing quarantine-free travel from Tasmania and Queensland. A hard border remains in place for the other state and territories.

Friend arrived from London, went through airport without any instructions about isolating. Caught normal taxi home. Friend arrived on flight with omicron positive passenger. Found out via tv news. Never contacted by authorities. 400 unaware passengers freely waling our streets...

Does it need pointing out with regards to this variant that these people are supposed to have been fully vaccinated and test negative 3 days before travel, wear masks during transit and *still have tested positive?

We’ve had the time to build quarantine stations in the area around major airports to isolate travellers straight off the plane with minimal community contact, medical facilities available and a methodical plan to deal with potential outbreaks. But it didn’t happen.
What about the other countries…it isn’t just 9 countries ..a women had been to Egypt and Turkey …quarantining returning travellers is the major response required for the new variant
Are travellers no longer required to prove negative test prior leaving the country from where they came. If not, we need to just open the doors and let it happen. What are we thinking? What is the point of locking down internally if this government is just not preventing entry.

New variant arose in a Country where 24% of the population are vaccinated
Despite it’s high transmissibility seemingly this new strain is not as virulent nor contains as high a viral load as Delta. The fact that both parties are doubled vaccinated, asymptomatic and isolating in quarantine is very encouraging. Stay safe.
