Herald Sun journalist Caleb Bond says a burnout crisis facing nurses in South Australia comes at a time when more people are needed in the system to ease the pressure brought on by COVID and an aging population.

The Advertiser is reporting 56 per cent of the 3,000 workers surveyed by the state branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation planned to leave nursing within five years.

“When you look at the amount of work they’ve had to do, COVID is one element, but in general nurses work extremely long hours and they work extremely hard,” he said. “So, you can’t be surprised that this sort of thing would happen but it comes at a time when we have an aging population, we have COVID to deal with and if nurses are looking to leave the system, then God help us all.”
