A new star rating system for childcare centres will be rolled out from next year in a bid to help parents gauge the quality of facilities when compared to national standards.

There are 5,500 childcare centres in NSW which are judged by national quality standards, as mandated by the Commonwealth.

Each place is judged on seven criteria: educational program; children's health and safety; physical environment; staffing; relationships with children; collaboration with families; and leadership.
