The NRL’s controversial plan to strip competition points has been thrown out in a dramatic backflip following a scathing player response.

The brazen plan to divide the 16-team competition into two conferences in order to squeeze in 14 more rounds before a finals series this year was reportedly submitted to the Project Apollo working group with a suggestion that all 16 clubs should start fresh with zero competition points.

SMH rugby league reporter Christian Nicolussi branded the point stripping proposal “easily the dumbest idea I’ve heard”. “Players have worked extremely hard all off season and clubs have lost players to injuries in those opening two games.”It comes after Broncos legend Gorden Tallis slammed the two conference model where each club would play the seven other teams in their conference twice.“If you’re a Queenslander, and you’re going to go to Sydney and play in front of an empty stadium, then you’ve got to go.
