Never again should we be a Fortress Nation that pulls up its drawbridge to the world. Never again should we be so dependent on lockdowns, curfews and the policing of our citizens in the name of public health. | OPINION by Tim Soutphommasane and Marc Stears

There’s every reason to feel confident. Theand NSW still rank as the most cautious in the world. We are not “letting the virus rip”.

Of course, there are challenges ahead. There will almost certainly be future outbreaks. Vaccine protections may start to wane. While Victoria now joins NSW in leading the way towards living with COVID, other parts of the country are yet to relinquish their attachment to “Zero COVID”. This will require a shift in our mindset. We have already consigned the daggy celebration of “donut days” to the dustbin of COVID past. We are now paying closer attention to hospitalisations and deaths.

That means it is well past time that we call out the callous attitudes towards fellow Australians stranded overseas; the quiet satisfaction many have had to the pausing of our immigration program; the paternalistic glee some have taken in the imposition of lockdown restrictions.

Yes but Dictator Dan is bringing in new laws to ensure it will happen again

What happened to The Age? it's become a right wing rubbish paper like The Sun

To borrow a word from the PartTimePM the “plan” was lockdowns and tight control until we got high vax rates. That would have worked ages ago if GregHuntMP and ScottMorrisonMP had bought vaccines early and rolled them out quickly. We’d have been free and easy months ago.

Cough cough Drawbridge Stop the boats

Even if warranted we must let people die instead?

In a hundred years time when there is a pandemic and no vaccine on the horizon of course we will lockdown again

I used to have a lot of time for the opinions for Tim S. when he was at the HRC. Sadly the pandemic has exposed some shakey logic on his part.

The Age has fallen a long way.

The results of fast hard lockdowns of borders has proven its effectiveness especially in WA

What a stupid piece. The Age is totally unreadable now. Sad for a paper that my Dad used to look forward to cover to cover with me every day. If he was still here he wouldn't use it for compost

Sure timsout. Got any ideas on what you'd do when the next vaccine resistant variant comes around? How many dead are you willing to tolerate? Give us a number so we know what your idea of freedom actually means.

This is Tim's opinion.Yes his opinion. In my opinion Tim's opinion is rubbish.Freedom, lockdown, pandemic, vaccine, vaccination, vaccine mandates,ICU, deaths, masks. It's a pandemic timsout .Yes Tim, lockdowns, virus control, borders, nurses & doctors, hospitals. Its a Pandemic Tim.🤷🏻‍♂️

Good The Age that TimS is starting the conversation Fortress Aust' was caused by: Criminal negligence by politicians ignoring REQUIRED urgent action on Quarantine and Vaccine Criminal negligence by politicians ignoring health advice - lock downs mask wearing - ' off to the footy'

The Age printing more garbage , what an embarrassment of a newspaper

An ill-informed, simplistic blog post. Hardly fit for a national broadsheet. This is what The Age has come to eh?

The Age no longer supports hard working Australians, they are paid to spread untruths

Agree strongly but with Scotty and his Backslappers at the helm what else could we expect 🤷‍♂️

You have a crystal ball and can predict the future ?

So we should have tens of thousands of funerals instead? OK timsout 🙄 theaustralianway is the LNP way. ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️

What alternative to the last 18 months are the authors proposing? Aussies stranded overseas was a despicable govt policy. But that aside, as someone in the UK, I can guarantee you didn't want what has happened in UK & Europe. There is a lot the Aus state govts got right.

Covid be like, hell yeah! Me going to love you long time now!I’m ready to smoke me a couple of hundred thousand Aussie lungs! Idiots.

I don't know what's worse. The article or the fact it took 2 people to write that garbage.

Let’s just cancel pandemics in the future. There that’s fixed it!

What a load of bullshit! Anyone who tells the public there will not be any lockdowns again is gaslighting the readers!!! If you didn't know any better you'd think & smh have been bought by Murdochracy since PeterCostello took over!!! ThisIsNotJournalism auspol

Yet another image of people drinking beer. Would think we do nothing else Preparing for the election saturation of the Scott'daggy dad' 'he's just like us' farce?

Dan begs to differ…

I am glad my state govt looked after us via lockdown. The feds and the media would have inflicted herd immunity on us like the UK and many more would have died.

So what you’re saying is ‘just let people die’? Did I get that right? Grind the hospital system to a halt? You do understand that government has an obligation to protect public health? Jesus Christ!

Never again read the age which publishes ludicrous opinions.

Yes we have saved thousands of lives, but at what cost? 1000s of small businesses closed forever, many people suffering mental health issues, plus more people drowning in the future because they missed out on swimming lessons during lockdown

This comment from opinion piece should be applied to LNP climate shenanigans “Government power has grown, without any increase in accountability.” But there will be crickets 🦗 about LNPClimateCriminals

Exactly, what a terrible decision!

We’ll follow the right health advice, with vaccines.

It's a very superficial OPINION PIECE. EASY to advise when you aren't held responsible for the results of that advice It's only your opinion. Not factual.

Yes but now DanielAndrewsMP want to introduce pandemic laws to limit our freedom 😡

I put faith in DanielAndrewsMP protecting the public , not less than independent journalists ThisIsNotJournalism Australia auspol

Lockdowns weren’t fun but saved lives. The alternative is unthinkable

Thank you captain obvious

The alternative? Large death rates and a collapsed health system. Clearly, you have failed to understand the pandemic in its simplest form.

'We' had to depend on lockdowns because Greg Hunt can't return a fucking email.

He’s not a public health expert so I’m not interested in his condescending elitist commentary. You seem to live it tho. A paper out of touch with its population.

A fortress nation that pulls up the drawbridge to lock out its' own citizens

Never again should we ignore the warnings from epidemiologists - but we will because 'it's the economy'. People's memories are short - hell we've got people parading around with Nazi symbols for heavens sakes - so much for 'lest we forget'

once again tim you are incorrect.

I'm all for closing the drawbridge but the authoritarian governments are still here. They take more freedoms monthly. Everything we do is recorded, tracked & judged by government.

And what was their solution? “Political Theorists” wouldn’t have a clue about how to manage a deadly pandemic. All care, no responsibility.
