'Nothing prepares you': With cremains in tow, a wife is confronted with the surreal amid the sorrow| GoodWeekendMag

Cremains is a real word for the ashes left after cremation. How those cremains are packaged is a surprise. Because, in the bold scheme of stepping away from “high-flying” aviation and political jobs in Hong Kong and Australia, you don’t think about the vessel in which your human flotsam will be delivered to your wife of 23 months.

Perverse questions vault into your head as you stumble from the crematorium, clutching your husband’s remains to your chest.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Paul and I agreed on the reality of death. It was the end. Funerals, cremations and burials were merely rituals to deal with an unpalatable fact of physics. For that reason I didn’t want to keep any of his ashes. But 30 minutes of driving and I suddenly did. Just a little scoop from the bag would do.
