'Not spoilers, wreckers or lunatics': Latham sets sights on schools | JordsBaker

One Nation MP Mark Latham says teachers and principals should get bonuses if their students perform well, and believes schools should be given financial incentives to achieve better results.

"Should part of [the promised extra funding for schools] be allocated to encourage schools as an incentive to get better outcomes once they are measured, and drive the system to higher levels of academic attainment?" he said. Mr Latham also believes the teaching workforce should be paid more and given performance incentives. "Why aren't the best teachers, [who are] adding value in the classroom, given performance bonuses for their magnificent contribution?" he said.

One of the members of the committee, David Shoebridge, said school funding was based on need, as it should be. "Not understanding the generational shift to need-based funding has led to an entire inquiry into a marginal part of school accountability," he said.
