The Oscar nominee is certainly the best thing in this slow-going tale about grief, but she does have her limits

Melissa McCarthy is on a roll. Since 2011, when she secured her big break by making light of her bulk in the raucous comedyThe turning point came three years ago with her leading role in, a bio-pic about Lee Israel, the writer found guilty of forging and selling letters purportedly written by famous authors and artists before their deaths. McCarthy’s sardonic and poignant performance struck precisely the right note, justly scoring her Oscar and BAFTA nominations.

In desperation, she begins to plant a garden where an unlikely saviour shows up. A dive-bombing starling that tries to sabotage her efforts makes her angry at first. Then anger turns to interest and finally, she becomes attached to it.There are echoes of last year’s Australian film, which explores a similar idea but Melfi has been trying to film this script since 2005. In the early draft, he says, Jack was stoically carrying on and Lilly was in the hospital.

Melfi and writer Matt Harris have done their best to enliven their sombre theme with a cast of watchable eccentrics. Jack’s group therapy sessions account for some of these and McCarthy does her best, displaying her usual lack of vanity by going into battle with the starling while wearing an oversized football helmet.
