Ms Burney has been at the forefront of the push for a referendum, leading the government’s negotiations and engagement with all relevant groups.
“The original position of the prime minister was to put a question on the Saturday and then provide the detail on the Monday, the backflipped on that position,” Mr Dutton told reporters on Friday. “It’s called machinery bills or the referendum act, there’s going to be legislation required to put a referendum in place.”
Ms Burney will host meetings with working groups in Canberra this week as the government continues towards its first term deadline for a referendum.
