New Russian COVID-19 variant confirmed in Queensland

At least 74 passengers and crew who arrived in Brisbane on a Qatar Airways flight QR898 from Doha on February 17 will now remain in quarantine until Monday, March 8, after two cases of the B1.1.317 variant — or Russian strain — were recorded.

“As more variants emerge, we are taking a cautious approach. In some cases, this means we have further enhanced our quarantine requirements,” the spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman added that the Russian strain was “not considered a variant of concern, but as the variant is very new, we are remaining cautious while we learn more about its incubation period and transmissibility”.Queensland Health said the extended quarantine period was ‘necessary to protect Queenslanders’.
