Anonymous online trolls will be unmasked in a new social media crackdown that will hand Australian courts the power to order tech giants to identify perpetrators or risk bearing the cost of defamation payouts themselves.
Announcing the measures on Sunday, Mr Morrison said the internet should not be a “wild west where bots and bigots and trolls” can harm people without consequence. “Free speech is not being allowed to cowardly hide in your basement and sledge … and harass people anonymously and seek to destroy their lives,” Mr Morrison said.Mr Morrison said the online giants needed to be held accountable for the world they had created, to ensure there was a “quick and easy” method for users to address harassment.
The centrepiece crackdown on online trolls will be a change to the law to make it clear social media providers are responsible for payouts arising from defamatory comments on their platform where the troll cannot be identified.
How about LNP trolls? Do they get called out?
And to protect himself 1
This is all about silencing the growing criticism of the Australian people on this current LNP Federal Government.. as if this was ever about women and children.

Won’t happen.
I don’t believe as a tax payer I should be paying legal costs of persons bringing defamation cases to the courts. Tell me how it is ok not to use taxes for elderly pensioners to live above the poverty line but we can support defamation costs?
So anyone who disagrees with the LNP will be threatened.
I move, that the member, no longer be heard.
I quite like posting as anonymous, I express my views without offending anyone I know. I think it would be a massive breach of trust for the government to push through laws like this, A huge attack on democracy. This goverment is alway trying to silence critics
For those that think this will protect the innocent, ask yourself, who is going to fund the legal bills? It sure won't be government money. I doubt most of us have rich benefactors, so no blind trusts. The answer is most can't afford it, so nothing changes for us. But for them
About time.
Is this trolling ?
What is an anonymous troll? The abusive? The critical? The whistleblower? The frustrated? An effective measure on Twitter is block and report. Why is that insufficient? And is anonymity worse than purposeful misinformation from elected officials?
I don’t think , I know buddy
MrAlewood Many chronically unwell people are repeatedly rejected for Disability Support Pension..Scott Morrison doesn't care about hurt & harm his inhumane social security legislation causes them.Censorship b4 an election, that's all this is.
How?
Is this because they have figured out you can make money by suing critics.
theliarfromtheshire distracting attention from his failure to create a federal ICAC, breaking his election promise
This should be used to crack down on rapists an ban them from the internet. I hope if you get caught doing that, that you suffer... you are not the same as rats, less then rats. As valued as dead skin cells in a vacuum..
What about anonymous donors to Government Ministers? Who unmasks them? auspol
Will The Age also screech that the bill is an overreach of powers?
How many defamation cases have started with the perp being a faceless troll? The 'facelessness' of an abuser makes the abuse ridiculous and unbelievable rather than defamatory. Perhapa I am too discerning about what i believe is said about ppl.
This troll refuses to be anonymous! auspol
Good speech
Let’s have a decent exposure of the scale of the problem please: Murdoch media monopoly. Destruction & politicization of the national broadcaster, our abcnews, defamation actions by powerful politicians funded by ‘secret’ trusts, and now empty threats against online criticism.
So it’s fine to hide $1m in donations to an ‘alleged’ violent rapist attorney general, encourage corruption & misinformation during a pandemic, incite racism, threaten protests ‘met with bullets,’ and lie constantly without consequences, but try to stifle online debate. auspol
The great Australian firewall
So we are going to have to adopt the Chinese method of using songs or symbols to signal who we are talking about. Spud, Galah, suitcase, Pooh Bear , Toad etc auspol
It's because the social media is exposing the truth of Scott Morrison every day with videos of rants and lies he makes on and on and on
A desperate measure from a tawdry televangelist PM who scraped by with one seat in 2019 election on the back of brazen lies in $hundreds of millions in Facebook ads, UAP & racist PHON preferences. An empty threat combined with defamation actions designed to intimidate. auspol
How about anonymous donors to political parties? Or media organisations that peddle misinformation and perpetuate false narratives?
Andrew Laming 🤔
PRGuy17 is in a lot of trouble here 😂😂😂
Wants to silence general critics, but won’t implement an independent anti corruption body. And Dan is the one with the dictator name tag, go figure.
Try to get these Trending. LNPHateFreeSpeech DictatorScotty
How many LNP trolls will be unmasked, or is this only for those who speak out against the government and their defamation happy hacks?
🤣😂🤣 Did it pass the Senate?
Poor PRGuy17 Aka Jessie 😂
How about unmasking the blindtrust donors first, mr ScottyFromMarketing
If Scott and his band of thugs want to have everyone going 'on the record' then they should put everything 'on the record' - something they would never do
“ScottMorrisonMP makes another announcement of something to distract from other failings.” There, I fixed it for you, auspol
This is all about censorship not trolling. Given Scott Morrison & co recent performance they can't seem to differentiate between trolling and censorship. Self protection for Morrison & co they are one of the largest sources of misinformation in Australia
Free speech available but only in a way determined by the butthurt litigation-happy folk in government? Yeah, that ain't it.
This is BS it is all about protecting the powerful no ordinary person will ever use these laws
disgraceful…be careful what you wish for ScottyThePathologicalLiar
I'm not that worried about this proposal per se if the vast majority of people can stay anonymous except with a court order. But it will be in how the tech companies comply and how well you can preserve anonymity with whatever new rules they bring in that matters.
700 in Dan’s office will be out of a job
Get 'em.
That's the pot calling the kettle black , how much abuse are we all copping from Governments !
