Mother wakes from coma to find baby was stillborn after being given 10 times prescribed morphine dose

A mother has described the heartbreaking moment she woke from a coma to discover her baby boy had died at birth after she was given 10 times the prescribed dose of morphine at a private hospital in the West Australian town of Bunbury.Sarah Hassan and Sunny Alam arrived at the hospital for what they described as an uncomplicated pregnancy

A midwife has been stood down and her registration suspended by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.The child mortality committee of the Department of Health and the coroner will investigate. When she started to feel stronger and stronger pain, she decided to take the medication, as recommended.He initially thought she was in a deep sleep, but in the morning when medical staff realised there was a problem, they asked him to leave the room.Doctors later told him something he never expected to hear."And within a few seconds, 'but your baby is no more'.

"They had done their primary investigation. She had been given 10 times the prescribed dose," Mr Alam said.

Morphine to ‘relax’? I was reluctantly offered TWO panadeine forte tablets and sent home to wait for full labour.

Horrific and so tragic. A devastating error. Opiates have to be double signed so how could this have happened without a catastrophic level of incompetence?

How tf do you give someone 10x the amount of morphine!!! Any nurse or doctor would be able to immediately tell that number was very off

No surprise it was a woman's fault either, investigate all midwives!

medical error is one of the biggest killers.

No, that was not human error. Anybody that went to school and have experience in medicine would know that big of a dosage would have been fatal for the baby and very harmful and possibly fatal for the mother. There is more to investigate there.

Not to blame shift, but was the primary cause of the incorrect dose a function of poor staffing and an over worked under resourced hospital?

I could imagine the trauma involved for all involved but the devastation for the parents would be unimaginable. How come for an uncomplicated pregnancy that the mother was offered morphine? It’s a strange drug to be given during labour I would’ve thought.

I was given 10 times the prescribed amount of oxytocin.

Was it double checked? Every time I have had morphine after an operation two nurses go over your name your hospital ID on your wrist and read out the dose, then administer it. What a screw up. Should not have happened. That poor woman. So sorry.🙏

Medical negligence. Very sad. Compensation won’t help the sadness but that’s all that can be done.

This is why nurses need to learn some basic maths!

If you get evicted then you get evicted together. it's hard to judge him, he is obviously in poverty and i am sure he didn't want to leave her unattended. If i was in his shoes, i would have taken her with me to work somehow. it's difficult to imagine their circumstances.
