Stress, anxiety, home-schooling and unemployment drove changes in drinking habits across the country during the national lockdown in March to May, and many people continue to drink at levels that may increase their risk of chronic disease

More than half of people who increased their alcohol intake during Australia's first COVD-19 lockdown continued to drink at higher levels, and more than a third say they intend to keep drinking at the increased level.

Many Australians who increased their alcohol intake during the first lockdown have kept drinking at the higher level.One in five younger people increased their drinking habits in lockdown compared with 13 per cent of middle-aged Australians and 5 per cent of older people.More than a quarter of younger Australians, aged 18 to 35, want to reduce their drinking compared with 22 per cent of people aged 35 to 53, and 10 per cent of those aged 54 and above.

Changes to the way alcohol was advertised during lockdown, to link it with tough times in isolation, and memes playing on home-schooling parents needing to drink to get through had also fuelled higher levels of consumption.during the pandemic to break the habit. Its data shows even before Victoria's second lockdown began, nearly a quarter of drinkers in the state wanted to cut back on their alcohol intake.

One in five people told the survey for the foundation's Break the Habit campaign that they drank less during the nation's initial lockdown in March, April and May than they had before it.
