will no longer be shown at an independent cinema in Melbourne's north following the ABC's investigation into the fate of retired racehorses that caused shockwaves ahead of the Spring Carnival.
Thornbury Picture House owner Gus Berger said he had pre-sold more than 50 tickets to two sessions but decided to cancel the screenings after seeing the "extremely disturbing" footage aired last Thursday. The premiere screening at the Jam Factory in South Yarra was interrupted by animal activists who stormed cinema with placards calling for an end to the horse racing industry's "cruel" practices.
He also feared backlash from distributors but after consulting with his staff, he said he received encouragement to "follow my gut".
Independent cinema in Thornbury who cares , these people have put money and effort into this project it deserves to stand on its merits without outside interference.
Still showing Chinese movies? asking for a friend, Ridelikeagirl
Woah ....... can’t wait for the woke feminists to be outraged ...... don’t you hate conflicting virtue signals?
They can go and get stuffed
As they should, nothing to celebrate here
I don’t agree but it’s their theatre I would say this us a brilliant story if Michelle and her family and her fight to be recognised . Loved it
MayneReport I hear they’re also going to stop showing Joker and Once upon a time in Hollywood and any other movie which has a human being killed.
Good!
Ban_Live_Export If you are desperate to see the film lots of other cinemas are showing it. How about we allow people and businesses to make decisions based on their personal convictions.
that is just knee jerk rubbish.
Yeah... that’s the reason they pulled this tripe
But the cinema will show The Joker, a movie that attempts to get the viewer to sympathize with a murderous psychopath.
At least they have some morals. horseracingkills
rabidgreenlunaticleftcircus
Gus Berger owner of the cinema has spent more time in the TAB than his cinema. Thornbury cinema sell alcohol. Do you see the TAC ads of the deaths on our roads. Gus Berger don't care about horses. If your fair dinkum Thornbury cinema stop selling alcohol.
Ridiculous
AnimalsAus Great decision. Animal abuse for human entertainment doesn't deserve a platform.
Hypocrites The Age. Sunday night you wanted to kick off the racehorse story now your playing the sympathy vote card. The Age full off fake news. Like to start fires destroy lives and sit back collect your coins. Michelle Payne is a great Australian and belongs on the big screen
Don't agree with that. The movie's focus is on a woman's notable achievements ... wonder if it would have been pulled if it were a male lead? And perhaps the filmmakers would have some recourse for compensation...
Quote “It wasn't really about making a statement” ... that’s why I made sure it got reported and my comments were available.
That is like canceling The Lion King over concern about cruelty at a zoo. Someone worked really hard to find this 'issue'
AmberRajen Well there goes my one line. 😂
Let people decide for themselves. What is this? Big brother.
AnimalsAus ....and the trainer is up in animal cruelty charges for using a jigger.
So many lane crossers with faulty wiring
Omg victim hood chic is out of proportion with reality
I’d say the bigger issue here is how ALL animals are treated at abattoirs. All the cattle, sheep and pigs, and, yes, ex racehorses too. They all deserve to be treated with respect as they go to their deaths.
Fantastic idea to penalise actors and others for months of hard work to make a film to celebrate a massive achievement against the odds.....morons
AnimalsAus Good.
That’s one theatre I won’t be going too
AnimalsAus good for them! The racing industry should be treated like pornography & removed from mainstream society. It's not a sport, it's just part of the gambling industry. It's not glamorous & it shouldn't be glorified.
Obviously the people who run the Cinema are dickheads.
Let’s pull all films that show animals dying. You know horses dying in battle etc.
AnimalsAus 😔 I feel here 'dominating' - some people here
MiniLeviathan Interesting her life took off after winning the Melbourne cup trained by a disgraced horse cheat aswell
Don’t punish the filmmakers! At its heart this movie is about the human spirit! It’s not about the cruelty to horses! Stop politicising the movie! Boycott the Melbourne cup but not the movie!
Ridiculous decision
What are they going to replace it with, reruns of Rocky 15.
Great!
MiniLeviathan 'AU REVOIR, SHOSHANNA'
That’s stupid. Did they refuse to show Schindler’s List? AND the story is about a courageous and inspiring WOMAN and we should be celebrating her!
What BS.
MiniLeviathan Classic Thornbury move
The TFH of independent cinemas
🤦🏼♂️
Oh ffs! This revisionist approach to everything is exhausting. The film isn’t about the fate of a horse. It’s about the fate of a brilliant sportswoman. Explain to me the sudden resurgence of greyhound racing ‘poetry in motion’ ad campaign. What happened to the mass dog graves?
Really?
Thornbury Picture House Won't: Show a movie about racehorses because it's cruel. Will: Serve actual pieces of slaughtered animals.
And so the movie house should , nowt nice about cruelty to animals .
Boycott THORNBURY PICTURE HOUSE
seems like you are just trying to stir things up rather than genuine news from a small cinema weeks after the movie came out and was probably due to be retired
If there's one book you Gustofilms should never judge by its strange and squishy cover, it's the squid
Knee jerk
Yet, they're Gustofilms happy to have pork + veal (slaughtered baby cows) meatballs on their menu.
pathetic.... It's a great movie as well.
They have only been doing that for the last 200 years. Now people have pulled there heads out of the sand.
Thoughts JoshKaplan?
Fair enough.
