Mojean Aria grew up in Australia knowing his career would be "in America, where there's more opportunity to have an ethnic flair in your work".
"I never would have thought growing up in Sydney, and coming from ethnic parents, that I would be on the set of a big Apple show or be working with Hugh Jackman in America," he tells ABC News. When AIPA approached Aria to teach a week-long masterclass, he agreed on the condition that a scholarship go to youth from these backgrounds.
Aria, who recounts spending much of his teenage years being singled out in the industry for being different, hopes the scholarship will help more young people challenge the idea of what a film star looks like. "Sometimes I feel like saying 'ugh', because I don't know how to answer that question. I felt it very early on that I'd be looked on as other.
