A mature-age engineering student at the WA School of Mines says stealing nuggets from a Kalgoorlie gold mine was a really stupid mistake.

Speaking outside court, Ruzunga told the ABC he did not know he was committing a crime by taking the nuggets and he still hoped to graduate as a mining engineer."It came out of curiosity, being a student and trying to know more and more, I thought if I pick up this for my studies, not in the sense of finding the value of it.

"I just wanted to know what this is ... because it was mixed up with different colours with different properties. The court heard detectives from the Kalgoorlie-based Gold Stealing Detection Unit arrested him on January 3 when he declined to answer questions during an interview. Sergeant Tony Di Giuseppe said the thefts were more serious because they occurred on multiple occasions.Ruzunga's defence lawyer Travis Cranley described Ruzunga — who has been living in Australia for the past seven years after relocating from Burundi — as a"leader of his community" who speaks six languages and has worked as a translator for other African migrants and teaches them English."He needs to continue to find himself work in this town," Mr Cranley said.

"A conviction will make it harder for him to prove he is not only a reliable worker but an effective and honest worker."

Oh ....yes...say no more...

Let me get this right. Steal $4000 worth of gold. Claim you didn't know stealing was wrong. Get fined $2500, and NO conviction. Australia is still the criminals paradise

Good for him. In the end, aren’t we all stealing it from the indigenous owners?

Have to remember that, pleading ignorance can be used as a legitimate defense now 🙄

Legend.

Let him enjoy his golden nuggets!

Bollocks - 4th year mining student....he would have known what he was doing. The first time i worked on gold mine it is part if your induction to not steal gold - very clear on that subject

“Didn’t know it was illegal” I can’t wait to use that excuse. But I bet I wouldn’t get away with it! WhitePrivilege

Didn't know it was a crime, judge swallows it.

We are taken for idiots and put out what that

Plead guilty and still lie your way to a $1,500 profit!

We are paying to educate a 51 yr old refugee who ultimately chose a $4000 score over a potentially lucrative career..
