A 54-year-old Tyson graciously accepted a draw — after an eight-round heavyweight bout — despite looking the better fighter in an exhibition on Sunday that didn’t have official judges, or an official winner.
There was no knockout blow, but fears of an underwhelming sparring session were put to bed as Tyson worked on the front foot early; the thrill of seeing the former heavyweight king in the ring again enough to entertain the masses.Asked if he thought he won, Tyson said: “Yeah, but I’m good with a draw.”We didn’t know what we’d get, but the chins of both Tyson and Jones Jr. held up, and maybe more impressively, the output in the later rounds was still there.
California State Athletic Commission officials required two-minute rounds instead of the usual three-minute rounds and mandated larger than normal 12-ounce gloves. On top of that, the CSAC didn’t score the bout — it being an exhibition — but celebrity WBC judges Chad Dawson , Christy Martin , and Vinny Pazienza came to a draw.
Boxing journalist Dan Rafael labelled Pazienza’s scorecard “pure insanity”, while most in the boxing world agreed it was a clear Tyson win.
