One of Australia's most prestigious universities offers cash grants of $7,500 to help Chinese students get around the coronavirus travel ban and resume their studies.

In a statement, the University of Melbourne said it had been a difficult time for affected students and"we are working hard to ensure they can complete their studies on time".

Coronavirus is now hitting Europe and the Middle East. Experts say we all need to start preparing for things to get worse. Last year, Professor Babones produced research on the massive revenue reaped by top-tier universities from international students. He warned, and a downturn in students from China would be"catastrophic".

So how many students came in this way?

Commercialism of our Universities at its worst. What next from these money hungry institutions run by bean counters no less. Descended to the gutter.

Hey all the angry ppl, the government is the one that came up with the laws and policy that allows students to came to Aus via this way. And no duty of care is being breach here by the uni!!!!

Hey JillHennessyMP DanielAndrewsMP found some real problems for you.

Reprehensible. Putting everyone else at risk.

Hopefully they all return to the arts faculty

Lost house in fire can u get some relief after all my education.will stay in Australia.

traitors

unimelb why don’t you send your teachers to China to teach them?

Time Ozzy Universities were for AUSTRALIANS FIRST then ONLY if there is Spare space can outside students be placed

The way they this is about $ ...reckon there might just be one or two righty administrators involved.

No they don't. clickbait

We will know who to blame if the Coronavirus starts to spread in high numbers across Australia.

It's all about the Money - Absolute disrgrace

Great idea, and charge Australian students more in fees, and give that money to the Chinese students to have a 3 week holiday before their classes begin.

So not so much circumventing the ban but rather helping them meet the requirements of entry set by the Govt.

CoronavirusOutbreak is spreading into 6 continents. It became a global public health crisis. How could the university risk others lives to satisfy their students?

It's all about money isn't it?

They should be defunded

Do these students need to self-isolate prior to travel or on arrival? Or only if they exhibit symptoms after arrival? I don’t understand how we can maintain containment this way. Does anyone know how this works?

Ffs can we nuke melbourne yet?

Australian universities have now become a Chinese shopping basket. Disgraceful how reliant they have become.

They should be locked up for trying to infect us with this terrible corona virus

NOTDumPhuk

Sounds like the US. The universities here take all the Chinese nationals because they can pay full freight. No one wants to discuss how they steal trade secrets and do not contribute to our society.

That's a very misleading headline. It's not a 'grant to get around the travel ban', it's a reimbursement for the lost expenses of students - pre-paid accommodation, refunds of student fees, flights to and back, etc. They are not offering to pay people to fly through 3rd countries

Can someone talk about Swinburne University ( one of many unis) holding educational degrees hostage over a new req. which was implemented after we began? Simple breach of contract & no one gives a fuck!

No

How does this circumvent the travel ban? It complies with it. No doubt about the reliance on up front full fee paying students. That's the result of formal government policy. The corporate University!

Why is this allowed putting profit before the safety of potentially the whole country

Chinese students are already cashed up. Giving money to the privileged.

The international ed industry has perverted the incentives of university admins.

Id like to say it concerned me but the disease is coming and it will pass through just like Spanish Flu and Plague did. The elderly and vulnerable will die. I pray some of the elite pass as well. Everywhere there are holes in our defense although the panic may be worse

Arrest the vice-chancellor and board.

Looks like reversed people trafficking to me?

ntwood

what country is going to let a Chinese student in so they use it as a quarentine station in transit to Australia..? any trying to circumvent the travel ban shld be turned around at the airport ..any aiding them in Australia locked up

no one's circumventing anything, what are you even talking about

I guess these institutions no longer teach or employ ethics. Appalling lack of duty of care

They are giving money away? What a farce! Thought universities were crying out for funds!

Putting everyone at risk. It's 2020. You can teach online in the interim.

Chinese students en masse are *already* spending two weeks in self-quarantine in intermediary countries before coming back here. If you don’t like it, direct your outrage at the Australian government who set those parameters for entry to Aus—not the unis.

Clearly our uni system is no longer abt education. It's money, cash, profits & fabulous salaries for senior staff, who do what exactly to earn it?

Ok, fucking over third world countries for money. Where have I heard that before? How about just invest in an online education system that is accessible from China? Like want do you think Thailand should bear the risk of infection for you? As an alumni I’m disgusted

Wankers

WTF unimelb!!! We are about into into a pandemic with 40+ countries now infected and you pull the shit! Will you also foot the bill and compensate anyone who contracts the disease linked to 1 of these students that have circumvented the travel ban? morons Covid_19 profitfirst

China disinfects streets, public places & house fronts while the world watches & wonders why they do. The world gets greater virus spreading than does China. Who'd have thunk? Then 'intelligentsia' in Aussie universities reward Chinese who circumvent travel restrictions.

Is that why do we give Universities billions of taxpayers money? Shame, shame

cash (everything)

1st March 2020: 'An international student from a Melbourne University tests positive for coronavirus'

guessing a university degree is not a sign of intelligence

Idiots

Shouldn’t arrests be made of the architects of this scheme?

abcmelbourne This is irresponsible the government must do something about these students were is the duty of care of our kids going to the same schools or university and if one student passes with a negative results and after the 14 days but has symptoms in 27days instead it's going to be bad

Is there anything the Uni's won't do for money?

Shameful! Sell your soul

Looks like HECS is going to go up...... big time.

Offer free essay writing.

If our universities can flourish only because of large enrolments of full fee paying foreign students, the system is rotten. As indefensible as this plan to circumvent the corona virus travel ban. Shame on UMelb and on any other Aus university doing anything similar.

how is this equitable for all students. How many grants did they provide to Australian students affected by bushfires Do they provide grants to AUS students affected by DV or other hardship? Will they provide reimbursement to AUS students who get sick from Covid-19?

Dorothy23897725 Just plain wrong.

why don't they spend the money setting up shop on Christmas Island and Darwin in isolation camps and teach there surely 7,500 a student should be enough 🤔

Australian Universities are fast becoming a Ponzi scheme, selling Australian residency for cash to the highest bidders

“Overexposure” is an understatement. It’s a Chinese university located in Melbourne

I still can't fathom the reliance of our higher education sector on international students. Apart from the fact they can charge them more because the government has wiped their hands of funding education and developers can build low cost, high rent properties and make a fortune

Yep, bring them in!

conorduffynews jrojourno GregHuntMP Similar to Australia's addiction to coal, bypassing coronavirus travel bans is morally corrupt

Reckless and irresponsible. They are putting the onus for monitoring the possible infection on third party nations. What if the quarantine is breached? Does it all have to come down to money. Please put the health of the community first.

The Uni needs it's chain yanked hard by the Govt.

That is extremely dangerous and irresponsible.

And $7500 to anyone infected due to their negligence?

Can't wait til they are all charged with death by negligence if any Australian citizens die as a result of their greed

If any of these people bring a pandemic, it will be Guillotine time for the University administration.

Disgusting breach of their duty of care to the rest of their student body.
