Meet the former banker taking on Barnaby Joyce

David Littleproud, who will challenge Barnaby Joyce for the leadership of the National Party, is a third-generation politician and former agribusiness banker.

He briefly lost responsibility for agriculture to Bridget McKenzie after the 2019 election, but he regained the coveted portfolio less than a year later when Senator McKenzie, who was also the sports minister,Mr Littleproud also took over from Senator McKenzie as deputy leader in February 2020, besting colleagues Keith Pitt and David Gillespie in a three-way contest for the role.

Mr Littleproud took up a job in agribusiness banking at National Australia Bank when he was 18, and worked at NAB for more than 16 years. He then worked at Suncorp for almost five years before running for parliament. He positioned himself as an advocate for small government and a believer in agriculture as the industry that underpins rural communities.
