World No.2 Daniil Medvedev has survived his toughest challenge yet at the Australian Open, beating both emerging Maxime Cressy and a hip complaint to reach the quarters.

With the fighting win, Medevev booked a final eight showdown against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, a keenly-awaited re-match of last year’s semi-final in New York, which the Russian won to set up a final showdown with Novak Djokovic. Asked about the on-court treatment in which the trainer worked on his lower back for an extended period, Medvedev said his day off on Tuesday would benefit him before playing Auger-Aliassime.“We’ve [got] some stuff to do, but when you have a day off ... [you can] take a painkiller and go for the [next] match.”
