It was a neat-enough idea: some refreshing sympathy for the devil, with a dose of non-traditional maternity. But the film, directed by Alice's production designer Robert Stromberg, groaned under mechanical execution, more memorable for the jagged cheekbones that conferred a rhomboid imperiousness on star Angelina Jolie's already striking presence.
The five years since feel like an eternity in studio franchise years, and this belated sequel arrives in a sea of The Lion King, Aladdin and endless Pixar-Marvel product like an unwanted stepchild, feeling less like an event movie than a ready-made tile on Disney+. A make-up artist crew of up to 70 were required everyday to get the dark fey characters screen ready.
Swooping majestically over the mountain ranges, wronged bad-girl-turned-good Maleficent — Jolie, who's not aged a day over infinity — has been living in harmony on the moors with her adopted daughter Aurora and a menagerie of CGI critters, but the neighbouring human clan has once again relegated her to evil incarnate.
"For some reason she was hated after all this time," the narrator informs us, papering over the lazy screenwriting that elects to reset the character rather than develop her.
I'm sure they were payed handsomely for the inconvenience. Was it ever going to be art?
A film that had no reason to be made,resulted (somehow) in a sequel that had absolutely no reason to be made, turns out to be not good. Who could have known?
