Converting light rail vehicles to wire-free technology for the next stage of Canberra's network could cost up to 20 per cent more per vehicle, an expert warns.

Converting light rail vehicles to wire-free technology for the next stage of Canberra's network could cost up to 20 per cent more per vehicle and is a sign the ACT Government is bowing to pressure from the Commonwealth, an expert has warned.Stage '2A' of Canberra's light rail will be wire-free from the city to Commonwealth Park

Chief Minister Andrew Barr has previously said he wanted to limit wire-free technology to only those essential sections because of concerns it could blow-out the cost. Mr Steel yesterday admitted the decision to make stage '2A' wireless would also mean a bigger price tag, as batteries would need to be retro-fitted on the rooves of 14 existing light rail vehicles, instead of running traditional wires and poles from above.Video showing simulation of Canberra light rail stage two

"The ACT Government's wedged here. The NCA's made it pretty clear they don't want an operation with catenary — the wires — and they've really forced their hand to run with a battery tram," he said.

It's time we called out the National Capital Authority nca_media, unelected and unaccountable car-obsessed bureaucrats who are holding Canberra back

To this potential budget blowout Sydney replies 'hold my beer'

Why the just have to around in circles all day

MaddocksThomas actgovernment nca_media ChrisSteelMLA Instead of spending unnecessarily money on wireless trams it is more important to build more kms in order to oil proof Canberra. Time is running out just like with global warming

What ever the cost it would be worth it. Look at how ugly Melbourne's tram lines are with cables all I've the place.

Why wouldn’t they build the next stage using autonomous trackless trams

And? Or would you like each vehicle to be be tethered to a blue ethernet cable?

Peer pressure needed to spark electric vehicle sales in AustraliaAustralia’s sluggish uptake of electric vehicles is driven as much by peer pressure as practical factors such as purchase price and operating costs. 💤 When I can drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast and know that I can reliably recharge my car in 5 minutes then I will happily go electric. How much does it cost to replace all of the batteries in an electric car? Australia has big distances and car based holidays. The problem is finding something that matches the needs, not peer pressure. The 4wd and work ute users may involve peer pressure, but again more likely lack of realistic alternatives.

'Systemic unlawfulness': 88 per cent of NSW Police searches found nothingPolice found nothing in 88 per cent of the 211,000 personal searches conducted under the force's quota-based system in 2018, prompting concerns the regime is leading to an abuse of police powers to meet targets. And 12% found drugs stuck up botties or fannys, knives and other illegal stuff. Quite good, really. NSW Police keeping us safe. The do gooders prevent police from just targeting the other 12% that are up to no good. So everyone gets searched. That’s the fault of the do gooders. I’m cool with being searched. I have nothing to hide. We should aspire towards 99% find nothing.

Australia to offer Pacific funds to PNG for ambitious plan to get power to the peopleThe first project supported by Australia's $2 billion Pacific infrastructure aid bank could be an electrification program in PNG, where only 13 per cent of citizens currently have an electricity connection. Because if not than China takes over Yet, the poor buggers in NSW are left without power after devastating bushfires. Infrastructure aid in kind, NOT CASH. Giving cash in the past never went further than lining the pockets of corrupt PNG politicians.
