It is Verstappen’s ninth pole of the season and 11th of his career, ending a run of three races without starting from the front and setting up another juicy battle with title rival Hamilton after they clashed in a heated practice session on Friday.

Mercedes’ engine crisis has struck once again with Valtteri Btotas taking another grid penalty for using a fresh engine, but Red Bull have big issues of their own with Red Bull star Max Verstappen suffering a fracture of his rear wing ahead of qualifying. “It was so much fun! It was so cool. The driving position is the most different thing really… I was just in awe the whole time. I was having fun and I couldn’t believe the car I was driving. Pretty surreal.”Verstappen drew first blood in qualifying one with a 1m 34.521s lap with teammate Sergio Perez just 0.054s behind. Bottas hit traffic and came third ahead of Hamilton on their first flying laps.

Verstappen hit back to regain top spot by 0.055s over Ricciardo, before Perez hit back to move just 0.017s behind Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez both had their first lap times deleted on Turn 19, but there were more good signs for the McLaren as Norris went into third in his first hot lap.
