Hairy Maclary author Lynley Dodd spills the beans on Jane Austen's influence over the shaggy black hero of her well-loved children's books | jasonfsteger

may not be immediately apparent, but it’s there. At least that’s what Lynley Dodd says and she should know. She is the creator of the much-loved Hairy and an enthusiast of the much-loved Austen.

Today we are meeting at The Atlantic, a seafood restaurant in the Crown complex on Southbank. It’s one of those oh-so Melbourne days – rain one moment, brilliant sunshine the next – and I am sitting in such a glare Dodd offers to lend me her sunglasses."I don’t think they’re too feminine looking; they don’t look like Edna Everage’s.

Hairy is an amalgam of several dogs Dodd has known "including one that was kept back for a year at obedience school". In Scotland, readers claim him as a Scot and as Dodd has a Scottish background she concedes a little bit of him is from there, "but he is a New Zealander". Her maternal grandfather was a commercial artist, her father’s sister studied art at the renowned Glasgow School of Art. The isolation meant Dodd relied on herself for entertainment and her mother, who "was always as keen on knowing about my books as I was myself", taught her to read before she started to school.
