Richard Gorka, 69, was asleep in his Rotorua Avenue home when he heard someone trying to jump the fence.When he went to investigate, he was set upon by two masked men who forced their way in, kicking down the front door.

"They armed themselves with a stool and they were breaking in so they kicked the front door in and I was backwards - lucky I had a machete there," Mr Gorka told 9News. He used the weapon to try to fight them off but the suspects were armed with pool cues.The incident happened about 1.45am.
