The CHO conceded the return to school in two weeks could extend the peak of the virus in some areas.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on Tuesday released data on elective surgery across the 2020-21 period. Queensland saw a far smaller jump, although it did record a rise, with 3.6 per cent of public patients waiting more than 365 days for their operation in 2020-21, compared to 2 per cent the year before.

“This reduced the number of elective surgeries performed in the 2019-20 reporting period and contributed to creating a ‘backlog’ of surgeries that had been delayed.”
