LIVE: Racism row rocks Games as German’s ‘totally wrong’ comment caught on camera

Fox Sports with New York PostfromFox SportsJuly 28th, 2021 9:18 pmGerman cycling sporting director Patrick Moster was forced to apologise after he was heard on camera making racist comments during the Men’s Olympic Road Time Trial. The German official was overheard saying “get the camel drivers, get the camel drivers, come on” as his rider Nikias Arndt chased down Algeria’s Azzedine Lagab and Eritrea’s Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier during the time trial.

The comment was heard on live German TV and ARD commentator Florian Nass described it as “totally wrong”.“Words fail me,” he added. “Something like that has no place in sport.”Moster claimed he made the comments “in the heat of the moment” and apologised to German media.

“I was in the feed zone and cheered on Nikias Arndt,” he told DPA.“In the heat of the moment and with the overall burden that we have here at the moment, my choice of words was not appropriate.“I am extremely sorry and can only offer my sincere apologies. I didn’t want to offend anyone.” headtopics.com

USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Wednesday that the 24-year-old decided against taking part, a day after she withdrew from the final of the team event after one rotation as she felt she wasn’t mentally ready.Biles will be evaluated again before it is decided whether she will participate in the individual events next week.

The statement read: “After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health.“Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals.

“We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritising her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the all-around. headtopics.com

‘FRUSTRATED’ USA ‘BULLIES’ ITS WAY TO FIRST WINGadiel Notelovitz in TokyoTeam USA secured their first win at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday in a result that will do little to quiet the storm of uncertainty surrounding the gold medal favourites.Against a completely outmatched Iran, the United States ran out 120-66 winners in a thrashing that saw relatively muted celebrations from a bench filled with NBA All-Stars.

The win came just three days after the United States went down to France – their first loss in 17 years at the Olympics – as reports swirled of a roster “frustrated” with their head coach Gregg Popovich’s system.Team USA stars were “grumbling” on their way back to the locker room after falling to France, according to a report in The Athletic. After dealing with Iran comfortably, there were no such complaints.

While Team USA’s rivals, like Australia, France, Spain and more, have closed the talent gap, Wednesday was a little throwback to the old days as Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and co. did what they wanted against Iran, who looked out of ideas from the get-go.

At times it felt like bullying as Team USA blocked jump-shots, or forced air-balls, before running out on offence and scoring in whichever way best pleased them in the moment. The United States had hit 13 three-pointers by half-time. They finished with 19 for the game. headtopics.com

Lillard top-scored with 21 points – all of those coming from beyond the three-point line – in a performance that ultimately didn’t teach us much. The United States will next play the Czech Republic on Saturday, July 31.‘INSANE’ PROBLEM WITH AMERICA’S BILES FURY

Simone Biles’ withdrawal from the gymnastics team final on Tuesday led to toxic criticism by some who claimed she should have carried on despite her mental health issues. But those suggestions are going down like a lead balloon, with many defending Biles over her brave decision.
