Perspective: Little political gain in opposing tax cuts for Labor, writes ErykBagshaw

Politically it makes little sense for Labor to oppose $158 billion in income tax cuts when they are put before the Parliament by the Coalition this week.

The government hopes it does exactly this. In Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s ideal world, the tax cuts will be passed by the Senate crossbench, Labor will vote against them, and the government will claim Labor plans to "tax Australians to death" until 2022.Tax cuts flow to higher workers because they pay more tax. Voters know this, it’s part of the reason they voted the Coalition back in because even if they aren’t earning $100,000 today, they hope they might tomorrow.

ErykBagshaw If they vote for 3rd stg tax cuts, ie for the wealthy, they will be seen as sell outs by labor voters, they could lose a lot

ErykBagshaw ErkyBagshaw proving he knows little about the aspirations of the Australian people, the ALP and economics. Australia Institute research found overwhelming opposition to stage 3 tax cuts, but hey why bother with research when you can simply repeat LNP talking points,

ErykBagshaw Jim Chalmers has the look of a captain and Albanese the look of a night watchmen.

ErykBagshaw AustralianLabor could at least make a bloody case for WHY tax cuts intended for 2025 need to be legislated NOW. LNP Madness auspol

Labor prepares to back Coalition's $158b tax cut packageLabor MPs have returned to Canberra following their election loss with a warning to new leader Anthony Albanese that the party's position on the tax package is depriving it of political oxygen. Morrison needs to stick to all or nothing, and let silly Labor and the cross bench parasites carry the can. 👨‍🌾 Totally. And it will bite them on the bum at the next election I would benefit from it, but I would prefer they not pass any of it than pass all of it.
