Linda Burney urges Peter Dutton to support Indigenous Voice | camerongooley

Linda Burney has extended an olive branch to Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and urged him to support an Indigenous Voice to parliament, as she delivered the 15th annual Lowitja O’Donoghue Oration as the first Aboriginal woman to be minster for Indigenous Australians.

“Peter Dutton has in recent days reflected on what it is like to be on the wrong side of history after walking out of the apology to the stolen generations,” she said.“In fact, that is what the journey of reconciliation is all about, and it is a path I would be very pleased to walk with Peter Dutton – and the Liberal Party.”to oppose former prime minister Kevin Rudd’s apology to stolen generations survivors.

The Uluru Statement calls for the creation of an Indigenous Voice, a representative body that would advise parliament on policy and legislation affecting First Nations people, that is enshrined in the constitution through a referendum. Burney acknowledged only eight of the previous 44 referendums had passed, including the 1967 poll in which Australians overwhelmingly voted to allow Indigenous people to be counted in the census.

She confirmed Labor would consider the work done by Wyatt and the co-design group he had established to investigate how a Voice would function. However, she acknowledged its scope had not been wide enough as it had not been able to look at constitutional change.“The AFL, the NRL and even the Pope have all given their blessing to the Uluru Statement and an enshrined Voice, and on this front – I say to Ken – I need your support,” she said.

CameronGooley Very unlikely given Dutton's MurdochGutterMedia fanbase!

CameronGooley Indigenous folk already have a voice to Parliament, it's called a vote. No need for anything separate. How racist!!

CameronGooley Ms Burney may urge DUTTON all she likes. Trouble is the LNP will probably try to find points of difference in every piece of new Labor legislation. Luckily Labor should be able to carry on due to the Lower House majority PLUS support of Senate cross-benchers.

CameronGooley Because the Aborigines are speaking with one voice?

CameronGooley Establish The Dreamtime as Australia’s State treligion? Definitely no thanks

CameronGooley One nation, one voice. Say No to any other voice.

CameronGooley How many homes do you own sweetie?

CameronGooley I trust you are just as compassionate about your Scottish heritage as your aboriginal connections.

CameronGooley Unfortunately it is just not in Dutton’s nature to do the right thing. Liberals achieved no indigenous voice whilst in government so the will do everything they can to obstruct it now

CameronGooley He will make up same lame arse excuse and divide country.

CameronGooley If he truly regrets walking out of the apology to the stolen generation he would show he has changed by supporting the Uluṟu statement from the heart & an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. But I predict his actions will show that he doesn’t actually regret the walkout.

CameronGooley I hope Peter doesn't 🙏 waste his time We donate $15.6 billion to Aboriginals yearly why?

CameronGooley Racism exists, most times secretly !

CameronGooley Australians don't like changing the constitution unless they see something grossly wrong with it. Demanding people support something only drives more people away.

CameronGooley I envy her challenge. I'll probably turn blue like a smirf before Dutton recognises that Aboriginal people are actually people, never mind anything beyond that. FRAH he is. Up to you to work out what those letters stand for, shouldn't take long, most Australians probably agree.

Dutton admits ‘mistake’, will consider Indigenous Voice planPeter Dutton will consider Labor’s plans for a referendum on constitutional recognition for Indigenous Australians lamenting his “mistake” boycotting the apology to the Stolen Generations. Reading this beautiful book, by tommayor11 – written to help his community UNLEARN the damaging & derogatory violence stereotypes about FirstNation men. The very same stereotypes that Dutton put front and centre at his presser, today. aupol That’s big of Dutton - maybe he does have a heart but after all. My bet is that that is all he will do; and do nothing yo promote it within his block Dutton should just take a golden parachute and move on.
