ADHD is costing Australia more than $20 billion a year in productivity losses, disability, crime, accidental deaths or suicide, according to a sobering analysis by Deloitte Access Economics."There is a huge economic burden that cuts across the whole of society," said Professor David Coghill, vice president of the Australian ADHD Professionals Association, which commissioned the report.
The biggest money drain was from loss of productivity largely due to absenteeism, presenteeism and leaving the workforce prematurely, costing $10.19 million in 2019 - $12,509 per working age Australian with ADHD. Recent international estimates suggest people with ADHD who aren't diagnosed until adulthood have a premature death rate six times that of people without ADHD. The most common causes of premature death were accidents at work or on the roads and suicide, Professor Coghill said.
