A new text helpline is reaching young people at risk of suicide at an unprecedented rate, with four times more texting a counsellor compared to calling. Suicide is the leading cause of death of people aged 18 to 24.

A new text helpline by Lifeline is reaching young people aged under 25 at risk of suicide at an unprecedented rate, with four times more texting a counsellor compared to calling.

In contrast, young people under 25 accounted for 37 per cent of contacts via a new text helpline trialled by Lifeline from July 2018 to March, according to an independent review of the program. The anonymity of text conversations made people seeking help feel safer, more in control, less distressed and more confident in their ability to cope after the intervention, the review found. "I didn't want to cry on the phone the entire time," said a person who texted.

More people from the lesbian, gay, trans and intersex community were also texting. Research by La Trobe University found 71 per cent did not use traditional counselling because they anticipated discrimination. Help seekers told researchers they wanted a "non judgmental and objective human connection in the first text message", according toTo do that, counsellors at Lifeline provide their names, something phone counsellors don't divulge.

Jacinda Ardern refuses to say if Behrouz Boochani can remain in NZNew Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is not biting on whether her country may offer asylum to Behrouz Boochani. Well she better thread carefully. We saw how this clown can be cruel to KKeneally 🙃 NZ takes 1/4 the number of refugees per capita that Aust does, so they could easily take them all. Taking just one, who made it largely with his Rasputin-like charisma, may not be a precedent NZ wants to set. Oh god, of course she will. She's all spin and optics. She'll get a huge PR boost out of a single refugee. She'll go on about how compassionate New Zealand is compared to Australia. Meanwhile Australia took in 30,000 refugees last year to NZ's 1000.🙄
