Labor says Scott Morrison’s ‘absolute’ commitment to dumped workplace changes includes its most controversial reform - allowing pandemic-afflicted employers to pay below the minimum.

Labor has accused Scott Morrison of supporting reforms that would cut workers’ pay after he committed to resurrecting a raft of dumped workplace changes, including exempting businesses from pay safeguards if they were hard-hit by the pandemic.that the Coalition was “absolutely” committed to the discarded parts of its omnibus industrial relations bill and would reintroduce them it into parliament if it wins the May 21 federal election.

“When Scott Morrison withdrew this part of his legislation last year he made it clear he was only doing so because he couldn’t get it through the Parliament – not because he realised it was unfair,” Mr Burke said.“We always expected he would try again to implement this cut to wages and conditions and now he’s confirmed it.”

“The measures in the omnibus bill remain the policy of the Morrison government which we will pursue, should we be re-elected,” she said. The government’s omnibus bill shied away from major changes to the system, but it would have relaxed requirements around approving collective agreements, criminalised underpayments and simplified some award requirements.

He said the proposals were “the product of getting unions together, employers together, over countless numbers of hours to ensure that we can come up with practical things that would make the industrial relations system work better”.
