Some koala populations have been pushed to the brink of extinction by bushfires and climate change. The federal government is committing an extra $50 million to recovery efforts.

The federal government has committed an extra $50 million for the next four years to recovering koala populations, after the Black Summer bushfires devastated marsupial populations.New money will be spent on habitat protection and restoration and researchClimate change, habitat loss and 2019-20's horror summer bushfire season have broughtEstimates of how many koalas remain in the wild vary greatly, but it is widely accepted the population was in decline well before the bushfires.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the new money would be spent on habitat protection, community-led restoration projects and population monitoring, among other initiatives. "Our $50 million investment will enhance the protection of koalas by restoring koala habitat, improving our understanding of koala populations, supporting training in koala treatment and care and strengthening research into koala health outcomes," Mr Morrison said.

"Koalas are one of Australia’s most-loved and best-recognised icons, both here at home and across the world, and we are committed to protecting them for generations to come."Among the funding commitments are $20 million extra for habitat and health protection projects to be run by Natural Resource Management and non-government organisations.

$10 million will be used to extend the national koala monitoring program, including increasing the number of sites sampled.

Guilt over the bush fires . How about helping the people that still live in tents

Wow couldn't provide free RAT tests during a pandemic but boom 50million for Koalas... Who actually believes anything he says? He runs the country like a moody teenager..

Actually there was announcement that they will receive $50 million . They have not received a cent if and you look at past announcements their promises are very seldom delivered

How many were killed during the bushfires. Where will they be safe in the future if we don’t address climate change now Don’t vote them back

Yup, election time. Scomo last 3 years: clear all the Koala habitat. Scomo election year: announce a funding for Koala population. auspol

'Boon' Sounds so cheery. Get more for non-existent water.

Anyone else smell an election coming up? $6B pork barrel available. 1) $1B for coral (over 3 election cycles). 2) $50M for koalas. What's next? Desperation showing. It's going to be breathtaking.

Imforthewhales If only we could trust the Morrison government to actually spend all the money they announce.

Throw the money in to saving their habitat that's the only reason their numbers are still declining .

So. At election time some hypocrite takes notice of what THIS COUNTRY HAD BEEN WARNING ABOUT FOR A DECADE. I would have preferred a new untethered government do this with sincerity. I dunno, maybe a large majority secured Labor gov with the freedom and conscience to rebuild Aus

I love Koala's, who doesn't, and habitat protection seems like a good thing. I hope it is well spent, Australian wildlife has had a hard time of it.

Once they are gone... it's forever 🤬🤬🤬

Busy day for the Feds, first the Barrier Reef, then the Koalas, both welcome funding initiatives just a pity they're done nothing for years, but jump into action a few months out from an election.

Smell that.I smell an election...no no. It's a distraction

Roll out the barrel .

Buying the Koala vote

The koala has to move to sydney and they will become the next king o’valley.

Maybe they wouldn't continue to decline if the government actually did something about the massive deforestation In this country

Koalas can't eat money.

Ive always thought that this is a pretty good idea for building populations of Koalas

Election year

Good to see some effort, but there is zero point in throwing money at koalas if you keep destroying their habitat.
