Former High Court judge Michael Kirby has warned new religious discrimination laws would support Australians of faith to use 'religious belief as a weapon against non-believers' and lead to a rise in anti-religious hostility | CanberraCamper

Public submissions on the second draft closed at the end of January. The bill is yet to be introduced to Federal Parliament."While the government's first draft was seriously unbalanced with the capacity to sustain a toxic atmosphere of nastiness and hostility, the second draft has swung the pendulum even further to support those who use religious belief as a weapon against non-believers," Mr Kirby said.

He also warned that a religious school could, for example, refuse to hire a gardener unless they produced a reference from a priest as evidence of their faith. Attorney-General Christian Porter said the bill "simply says ordinary Australians should not be discriminated against because of their religion – or lack thereof – as they go about their everyday lives".

Mr Porter said this is why there is "very tight ring-fencing around the protections for statements of belief".

CanberraCamper I feel more hostile toward the regressive, corrupt, pathetic excuse for a govt whose only achievement is trying to push this toilet paper worthy legislation through.

CanberraCamper Mr Kirby, before we go down the religious discrimination laws in this country, when is Life in Prison going to be Life in Prison? And, how is it that a murderer gets 10 years jail for the manslaughter of 3 human beings with possibility of Parole?

JosieMcskimming CanberraCamper Religion is a parasite on human society & we know far better than to let it be accepted as other than 100% myth & elitist exploitation of minors.

CanberraCamper Most hateful religion: Climate Alarmism. Zealots appear free to scream ‘DENIER!’

CanberraCamper Kirby is having a bob each way on this. Going to be detrimental the secular and the religious alike? Unlikely. Secular views have been favoured for too long. This just brings it back to blance. People should not be sacked or 'deplatformed' for holding religious views.

WeTheVoters2013 CanberraCamper I doubt the LNP will put secular law advice above religious nutology ReligiousDiscriminationBill

WeTheVoters2013 CanberraCamper I'm getting more hostile by the day, if not the hour. Anyone or organisation who discriminates against me or mine on religious grounds will cop it back from me.

CanberraCamper There is more than enough religious freedom now. The country should be examining the ridiculous dogma and doctrine put about by religious groups and start to move towards eliminating religion altogether.

stufromoz CanberraCamper Thank Whoever's In Charge for Michael Kirby and his comments. Just heard him speak on abcrn

CanberraCamper Nonsense, all that will happen is that it will be used to give non-Christians as many benefits as possible, while using the law to harass and attack Christians. The truth is we need to end all “anti-discrimination” laws because they are nothing but a tool of oppression.

CanberraCamper It’s for the wokes that make unnecessary obscene remarks about various religious symbols , like Sandilands

CanberraCamper Exactly. We need an anti-Terrorist law that is actually practised. Australians have never, before militant Islamists arrived, ever asked anyone their religion, never had a problem with peaceful people practising their religion. No religion in Australia b4 threatened others.

CanberraCamper As long as those brainwashed and radicalised foreign Christians and Muslims don't try to convert us infidel heathen natives since they recently appeared on Earth. It doesn't matter.

CanberraCamper Michael Kirby is a credible, principled, decent man. If he says discrimination can be 'weaponised by religious institutions against non-believers' I'm inclined to believe him.

CanberraCamper Well don’t allow the religious discrimination bill to be passed. It’s not needed.
