A Queenslander by birth, a Rhodes scholar and an investment banker by profession, Wylie has been made a Companion of the Order of Australia, the highest honour.

He first came to prominence when leading the sell-down of Victorian power industry for the Kennett government and as an advisor on the privatisation of Qantas. He co-founded an investment firm, was later Australia CEO of Lazards and since 2015 has run the Tanarra Group, which he founded.Out of hours, he was chairman of the MCG Trust for 25 years, overseeing the redevelopment of the ground for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Wylie is a runner, cricket enthusiast and accredited coach who was deputy president of BBL club Melbourne Stars when they had their own board, and last year was briefly mooted as a possible president of Collingwood. Wylie was chairman of the Library Board of Victoria until last year, served on the board of Florey Neurosciences and with his wife Myriam runs a foundation that is a benefactor to many causes. One is the Boisbouvier chair of literature at Melbourne University.
