There are 56.7 million subscriptions across the country, equating to an average of three per person, costing just under $40 a month

Single mum Julia Goudy forks out more than $140 a month for more than a dozen subscription services.“I forgot to unsubscribe to a couple of things after the free trial period expired, which meant the money was still coming out of my bank account every month,” the 36-year-old complementary medicine practitioner says.

Major players include television and movie streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Foxtel, music streaming apps such as Spotify and Apple Music as well as other apps and gym memberships. Rest chief executive Vicki Doyle says the research is proof that Australians feel overwhelmed by current and future finances, which can have a negative impact on their financial health.

She urges individuals to take stock of bank statements once or twice a year and cancel unused services and subscriptions."Our research shows that four-in-five Australians avoid taking action on their finances because they’re too busy, it takes too long, or they don’t know where to start.
